Kurdish Poetry Anthology - Alana Marie Levinson LaBrosse | AMENDS
April 17, 2013 - Alana Marie Levinson-LaBrosse (United States) aims to bring together young Iraqi intellectuals and bridge ethnic tension lines through the translation of classical Kurdish poems into English.
The talk was part of the second annual AMENDS Summit at Stanford University. AMENDS is a student initiative that brings together the most promising youth change agents from across the Middle East, North Africa, and United States to learn from each other, connect with global leaders and resources, and share, through TED style talks, their ideas and experiences with the world.

Kurd xawni am nishtimana, prr xeru, beru, nawtokana, xawni mezhui am zamana, bargari hamo gorzi am zamana, ba gora asperet satt hari wako to, bo nagreta chara nosi xo, bo haqi nabe awish wako ewa, alay xoi halka lam kazhu kewa."

Why Isn't There A Kurdistan?
Kurdistan is not an internationally recognized state, and the Kurds are the largest ethnic group in the world (approximately 40 million), without a homeland of their own.
After World War I, the Kurds came close to winning and keeping their own nation, but the Allies and the League of Nations never created Kurdistan.
The Kurds have been suppressed in Turkey and Saddam Hussein's Iraq, and there is vehement opposition to a Kurdish state.
There is infighting among Kurds, and despite some prominent Western supporters, there is no viable advocate for Kurdish statehood.
Despite these challenges, some argue that Kurdistan could be a viable state, as it has long been a bastion of stability in Iraq.
